In the mid-nineteenth century, Syosset was known as East Woods, though some people dubbed it Buckwheat, after a local crop. East Woods was in the path when the Long Island Rail Road extended its main line between Hicksville and Cold Spring Harbor in 1854. Syosset was a rural town prior to the coming of the railroad. Farmers transported their fruit, dairy, and meats by horse and wagon to bigger towns on Long Island and, later, to New York City.
